What is dry shampoo?

Have you heard of “dry shampoo”?

If you’re someone that finds it difficult to find some shower time, let alone hair washing time… then this is for you!

Especially if you’re just about to go out and realise that your hair is more like an oil slick and even a ponytail/bun can’t hide it…this will get you looking descent in 2 minutes ;-)

Now, I’d heard of the “no poo” method but not this variant. So I looked into this further.

Note: In case you’re wondering, “no poo” means “no shampoo” where you wash your hair with bi-carb soda and then rinse with apple cider vinegar. There’s a bit of a settling in period (especially if you’re still using commercial shampoos and if they have any harsher chemicals in there) but for me I found it to be a bit too drying for my hair type.

Back to dry shampoo - I discovered it a few months ago and am in love with it! It’s the perfect way to quickly get some oiliness out of your hair.

But for busy mamas and people, more importantly it’s super easy to make and so cheap!. AND this easy DIY version also doesn’t contain any nasty toxins that can be in commercial spray-on dry shampoos - like Butane, Propane or Fragrance (typically 100-1000’s of chemicals hidden under trade secret trademarks).

The dry shampoo recipe I use has 2-3 simple ingredients + essential oils of your choice:

  • Arrowroot/tapioca powder

  • Bi-carb soda

  • Cacao (optional for those with darker hair)

  • Essential oils (I love Lavender, Cedarwood and Rosemary for their hair loving properties)

Though some people use only this as their shampoo, I like to use this to extend my “wet shampoo”-ing time - so I can go between 2-3 weeks now with a few little dry shampoo touch-ups in between!

Here’s some other benefits:

  • Convenient, cheap, quick and easy!

  • Balances hair oil production

  • Travel friendly - light and no liquids

  • Helps prevent premature greying (as you’re not using any hash chemicals!)

  • Adds volume and texture to your hair

Hopefully I’ve piqued your interest and you’ll give it a go!
